INDABA RESPONSIBLE LUXURY SUMMIT

Can Africa lead responsible luxury travel?

As the world becomes increasingly aware of our impact and responsibility to the places we visit, CC Africa called together experts in travel, tourism, hospitality and preservation of the environment to look for answers to the question “Can Africa lead responsible luxury travel”.

On the 10th of May 2008, approximately 100 distinguished professionals from the travel trade and media industry gathered at the Hilton Hotel in Durban, South Africa, to discuss the interlocking roles of luxury and responsibility and whether Africa could lead this debate.

Each notable panelist and speaker was encouraged to share their differing perspectives on what defines the luxury traveller and what they felt the dangers were if we don’t get the balance right between luxury travel and responsible tourism. Various issues were discussed including the challenges and victories that have arisen amongst leading operators and owners in providing tourism that is simultaneously luxurious, high in adventure, planet friendly, sustainable and responsible.

CC Africa realised the importance of opening the debate and tabling it for consideration to the key players in the industry. The forum addressed many issues and fuelled thought. It was widely acknowledged that all of these questions require more discussion before conclusions and mandates can be reached, however sharing of best practice in an open forum significantly indicated the commitment of key players to develop appropriate answers to this challenge over time.

    Pat Stubbs said,

I am sorry I could not attend the Indaba Summit, but I applaud your efforts and think your earlier report of the proceedings was dead-on. No doubt ‘travel which contributes to a sense of personal identity and some capacity to change the world’ is uppermost in the minds of a lot of our guests.

Increasingly, we are getting comments to support the fact that people are interested in what the establishment they choose to use is putting back and especially in the case of rural communities of which Isandlwana Lodge is a part. I am convinced the way forward for rural areas where there is little opprotunity for jobs and people are living in extreme poverty is community based projects such as ours and certainly CC Africa sets the example for all of us.

Continued good wishes in all your efforts.

    I look forward to further
